處于玻璃態下的塑膠型材分子，鏈段運動基本上處于停止的狀態，分子在自身的位置上振動，分子鏈纏繞成團狀或卷曲狀，相互交錯，紊亂無序。

當受到外力作用時，分子鏈段將作瞬間微小伸縮和鍵角改變。整個塑料形體具有一定的剛性和強度（抗張強度、抗彎強度等）。在這種形態下，塑膠型材件可以被使用或進行機械加工（如：切削、鉆孔、銑刨等）。

一般非結晶形塑料（如：聚苯乙烯、有機玻璃、聚碳酸酯等），其玻璃化溫度高于室溫，我們可以將原料顆粒、定型了的制件視為玻璃態。至于聚乙烯、聚丙烯等“軟”性塑料，事實上也存在著“硬”性的玻璃態。

這類塑料中的非結晶部分，玻璃態溫度比室溫低很多（－123～85℃），在玻璃態度溫度以上處于高彈態，表現為柔性，而結晶部分熔點又比室溫為高（137℃），因晶格能的束縛，鏈段不能自由活動，表現為剛性，所以也能作為具有固定形狀的塑膠型材使用。
